Installation of pellet storage domes on Reunion Island as part of its energy transition

Installation Dômes de stockage de pellets

Background to the installation of storage domes

As part of Reunion Island’s energy transition, the ALBIOMA Le Gol and ALBIOMA Bois Rouge power plants have replaced coal with pellets. The partnership between the ALBIOMA sites and the sugar mills remains unchanged as part of this transition, and bagasse (sugarcane waste) is still used to supplement the pellets. This major change is part of an environmental initiative aimed at reducing the island’s carbon footprint.

To support this transition, Albioma has installed four pellet storage domes on the Port site. IESA, in a consortium with COREM, was asked to provide industrial automation, industrial electricity and industrial IT services to guarantee the performance and safety of the installations.

Our technical scope in industrial automation and electricity

The IESA-COREM group was involved in a number of areas, including :

Electrical design and installation

  • Overall site power supply:
    • HV studies,
    • Cable calculation notes,
    • Choice of architectures,
    • Cable routing,
    • Lightning technical file.
  • Installation of electrical infrastructures:
    • Transformer installation,
    • HV substations,
    • Low-voltage switchboards,
    • Sub-distribution cabinets,
    • Generators,
    • Cable pulling.
  • Others installations:
    • Lighting,
    • False floors,
    • Air conditioning.
  • Site security:
    • Lightning conductors (PDA),
    • Overhead lighting.

Automation and control:

  • Automation Studies
    • Design of PLC architecture,Drafting of functional and organic analysis,
    • Drafting of maintenance and user manuals
  • IT Infrastructure:
    • Deployment of a fiber optic network,
    • Installation of servers and watchguards,
    • Integration of a control system based on Siemens TIA Portal.
  • Supervision:
    • Development of an HMI with optimized 3D views.

Commissioning

  • Complete testing of equipment:
    • Input/output tests
    • Functionnal testing of motors
    • Validation of start and stop sequences
    • Safety tests

A successful mission to support the energy transition

This assignment was successfully completed thanks to the expertise of the IESA and COREM teams, enabling Albioma to ensure a smooth and efficient energy transition.

We would like to thank Albioma for their confidence, and we are proud to have contributed to a major project in favor of cleaner, sustainable energy.

Key elements of this pellet storage dome project

1. A long-term project: a 4-year project to contribute to the island’s energy transition

2. A large-scale operation:

  • + 50 FTEs during peak loads
  • + 500 light points
  • TGBT cabinets up to 18 ml
  • 150 kms of cable pulled
  • 4000 I/OS
  • Up to 200 KW of inverter power

3. Cutting-edge technologies: Siemens control, 3D supervision, fiber-optic network.

4. Effective collaboration with COREM and project stakeholders.

5. A sensational project: teams working at heights of over 45m. #IndustrialAutomation
